A week in Lucca

Old and new, Florence, Pisa and Lucca, symbols of Tuscany, are very popular and frequented places known all over the world, as opposed to Pietrasanta, Collodi, the Lake of Massaciuccoli and many other small oases of peace and serenity full of history, traditions and culture, but still out of tourism circuits.
Two diametrically opposite lifestyles, introduced in an ever-changing nature, within few kilometers, you go from the beaches of the Versilia coast to the rugged mountain range of the Apuan Alps, the marsh area of the Lake of Massaciuccoli to the Serchio River Park, from the sweet hills of the Pizzorne covered with vineyards and olive tree groves to the woods of beeches and chestnut trees of the Apennines.

Pietrasanta – the crossroad of sculptors from all over the world.
The walls of Lucca and its old town center
The leaning tower and Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa
Viareggio, the shore and Puccini’s life
Montecarlo oil and wine
The nature of the Park of Migliarino and of the Lake of Massaciuccoli
The history of Pinocchio in Collodi

Stages

Arrival in Lucca
Day 1
The hometown of Giacomo Puccini. Known all over the world owing to its monumental walls and to the Giunigi tower, but you will truly get to know the town by wandering around it. There are some evocative spots oozing history, tradition, passions; when walking on the Altopascio alley, it seems like going back to the Middle Ages, but it is not the only one. Many other spots will tell you about the history of this town, you will be surprised by the large number of “gardens”, churches and buildings.
Pisa
Day 2
Distance km. 42
Travel Time 4 hours
Difference in Altitude m. 10

The first day trip will lead us to Pisa. Along the bike path, traced by the Serchio River, which witnessed many harsh battles in the past, you can freely admire the countryside and the villages, which magnificently surround it. Once you reach San Giuliano Terme, you will proceed on a countryside road, with low traffic, for about 1.5 km and reach another bike path along the water main, built under the Medici family reign, which leads us directly under the Leaning Tower. And, then, the trip ends in the Park of San Rossore-Migliarino. From the railway station, bearing the same name, you can catch the train and go back to Lucca.
The Villas of Lucca

Even this trip starts on the bike path along the Serchio river, but this time from the opposite direction. You reach Ponte a Moriano and enter onto the road of the Villas, a countryside road with light and fun ups and downs, surrounded by vineyards and olive tree groves, where you will meet villa Oliva, Grabau, Reale, Mansi and Torrigiani, then the town of Collodi, the famous creator of the puppet Pinocchio with the magnificent villa Garzoni. Once you cross the valley, you will reach the Medieval fort of Montecarlo, an enchanting village located at a height of 160 m, surrounded by vineyards.
The Compitese

You start pedaling along the Roman style water main of Nottolini and arrive at the feet of the Pisani Mountains, hills covered with olive tree groves, pine groves, chestnut trees, woods, ancient bridges and water streams, centuries-old terraces of old buildings spread out, stone houses and villas, embellished with magnificent examples of ancient camellias. Welcome to the “valley of the Compitese”, in the south of Capannori, a few kilometers from Lucca, commonly known as the “Borgo delle Camelie”, the village of the Camellias, exotic flowers, elegant and refined, which have found their perfect habitat in these places.
Florence
Day 5
Train trip to Florence, which was declared world heritage of humanity by UNESCO. The place where the Renaissance came into being, universally known as one of the cradles of art and architecture. Let's start pedaling again up on the sweet rise of the Balbano Mountain (one hundred metres in three kilometers with a maximum gradient of 4%), after reaching the top, you must stop for a snapshot on the beautiful view, overlooking the lake of Massaciuccoli, the coast and the Tuscan Island chain.
