Rome and the Lazio Lakes

An adventure by bike through archaeological wonders, historic roads, quiet hilltop villages and ever-changing landscapes — far from the usual tourist routes.
It all begins in the Eternal City, with two full days of cycling through Rome: the first explores the iconic sites of the historic center — the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona — the second takes you along the Appian Way, deep into the Roman countryside, past imperial aqueducts and the evocative Catacombs of San Callisto.

From there, the roads quiet down and the scenery opens up: you’ll ride towards Lake Bracciano, perfect for a refreshing break by the water. The journey continues on to Viterbo, the city of the Popes, where you’ll stay for two nights — with time to relax at the thermal baths, wander medieval alleyways, or take on a scenic loop ride to Lake Vico, nestled in a nature reserve.

The final leg of the trip is all about taste and views: you’ll cycle through olive groves and soft hills, stop in Montefiascone for a glass of the famous Est! Est!! Est!!!, and reach Lake Bolsena for a well-earned swim, dinner by the water, and — why not — an extra day to explore by boat and enjoy the local cuisine at places like RetroGusto.

This cycling tour is designed for those who want to ride slow and soak up everything: the beauty, the history, the flavors and the soul of a region that’s still wonderfully genuine.

Appia's Way - The queen of the roads
Day 3

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure along the Appian Way, the legendary “Queen of Roads” that has connected Rome to the rest of the Empire for over two thousand years. Cycling here means riding on ancient Roman paving stones, breathing in history at every turn and feeling part of a story that spans the centuries.

This tour will take you through the spectacular Parco degli Acquedotti, a green oasis in the heart of Rome where the majestic remains of six Roman aqueducts rise against the skyline. Admire up close these incredible feats of engineering that brought water to the city for centuries, true witnesses to the genius of ancient Rome.

An experience that perfectly blends cycling, art and culture in one of the most iconic stages of your bike holiday in Lazio.

From Rome to Bracciano
Day 4
Distance 48km - Altitude +760m

After the intensity and wonders of Rome, it’s time to get back on the bike and head towards Bracciano, following quiet secondary roads that reveal the most authentic side of Lazio. As you pedal through gentle hills and cultivated fields, you’ll have the chance to stop in charming medieval villages, enjoy a coffee in the square and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of these hidden gems, far from mass tourism.

Once in Bracciano, a picture-postcard scene awaits you: the clear waters of the lake invite you to take a refreshing swim or simply relax on the shore, surrounded by nature. If you love history, don’t miss a visit to the impressive Orsini-Odescalchi Castle, a fortress that dominates the landscape and offers spectacular views over the lake and surrounding woodlands.

It’s the perfect day to experience cycling in Lazio among nature, history and simple pleasures, enjoying the slow pace of a bike journey that still knows how to surprise.

From Bracciano to Viterbo.
Day 5
Distance 63km - Altitude +1000m

After enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of Lake Bracciano, get ready for an exciting stage that will take you to Viterbo, following the ancient route of the Via Francigena, the historic medieval pilgrimage path. Here, the Lazio countryside reveals all its beauty: a mosaic of colors and scents, with white gravel roads winding gently through hills, endless fields, lush vineyards and perched villages.

The ride is a continuous sensory experience, an authentic immersion in the nature of Lazio. Along the way, you’ll stop in Sutri, a true open-air museum: be amazed by the Etruscan necropolis with its tombs carved into the tuff and the Roman amphitheatre, witness to ancient shows. Strolling through the historic center, with its narrow alleys and medieval palaces, you’ll soak up a timeless atmosphere.
And while you’re here, make sure to stop at Pizzangrillo: a fragrant pizza, a perfectly made supplì — here they’re really something special — and suddenly your break turns into a little feast of flavors!

Continuing north you’ll reach Vetralla, dominated by the Farnese Fortress. Explore its walls, visit the cathedral and enjoy the authentic soul of this village that has preserved all its ancient charm.

Your day ends in Viterbo, the famous City of the Popes, where you can celebrate with a traditional dinner. Try local dishes like acquacotta or fieno di Canepina, the perfect way to round off a day of cycling through the heart of Lazio.

Discover Lake Vico
Day 6

Today, the choice is yours: you can take a break from your bike and stroll leisurely through the cobblestone streets of Viterbo, discovering hidden corners, artisan shops and squares where time seems to stand still. Or you can hop back on your bike and set off for a new adventure: a 35 km route that will take you to explore Lake Vico, a true corner of paradise nestled among the hills of Viterbo.

Cycling around Lake Vico means immersing yourself in the most authentic nature of Lazio: this volcanic crater, now transformed into a crystal-clear lake, is surrounded by lush forests and landscapes straight out of a postcard. Along the way, on panoramic roads and dirt trails, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views, breathe pure air and be enchanted by the colors and scents of a nature reserve that offers unforgettable emotions.
A perfect experience for anyone wanting to enjoy cycling in Lazio, combining sport, adventure and the wonder of unspoiled scenery.

From Viterbo to Bolsena
Day 7
Distance : 35km - Altitude +500m

Your cycling holiday is coming to an end, but this last day is still full of unforgettable emotions. Leaving Viterbo behind, the route winds through ancient olive groves and ever-changing landscapes that surprise you with each turn of the pedals.

You’ll ride along the historic Via Cassia, traveled by pilgrims and wanderers for centuries, until you reach Montefiascone. Here we suggest climbing the Torre dei Pellegrini: the view from the top is truly unforgettable. And to make the stop even more special, enjoy a glass of Est! Est!! Est!!!, the famous local wine that tells the story and traditions of this land.

As you approach Bolsena, the final destination of your tour, the crystal-clear waters of the lake will appear before your eyes, inviting you to take a well-deserved break. Once in the heart of the village, be sure to visit the Chapel of the Miracle: it was here that one of the most important Eucharistic miracles took place, and to this day some marble slabs still bear the traces of this event that marked the history of Bolsena.

After this stop, rich in spirituality and history, it will be the perfect time to relax on the shores of Lake Bolsena: take a refreshing swim, enjoy a boat trip to discover the Martana and Bisentina islands, or savor a dinner featuring “Sbroscia,” the traditional local fish soup.

If you can, treat yourself to an extra day to leisurely explore the beauty of the lake and stop by RetroGusto, an unmissable spot to taste many local delicacies. It’s the best way to crown your cycling tour in Lazio, with one last toast to all the memories you’ve just created.
