The journey begins by the sea, with a seafood dinner and a peaceful day to prepare for your departure. From here, a gentle and quiet cycle path follows the Tiber River straight into the heart of Rome: pedaling along the river with the city’s domes on the horizon is a breathtaking experience.
After two nights in the Capital, the route leaves the city to delve into the Roman countryside, passing through ancient villages, lush woods, and historic pilgrimage paths. The stages cross the Cimini Mountains and Etruscan lands until you reach Viterbo, where thermal waters and the medieval quarter offer a well-deserved rest.
The journey then continues toward Lake Bolsena, Europe’s largest volcanic lake, which will serve as your base for the final two nights. From here, a stunning day trip by bike will lead you to discover Orvieto, a city of art perched on a tuff cliff and home to one of Italy’s most beautiful cathedrals, before returning for a grand finale by the lakeshore.
A seven-day itinerary that combines the magic of Rome, the tranquility of Tuscia, and the wonders of Umbria.
Welcome to the sea, where the Tiber meets the horizon
Your cycling holiday in Lazio begins in Fiumicino, a seaside town that combines the soul of Rome with the charm of the coast. It’s the perfect starting point for travelers landing in Rome and eager to start pedaling through sea, nature, and history.
From the moment you arrive, life slows down: the Fiumicino canal port, colorful fishing boats, and seaside terraces create a relaxed atmosphere and a taste of authentic local life. After checking into your hotel and setting up your bike, take a leisurely walk or a short ride to Fregene or the WWF Oasis of Macchiagrande, a perfect place to enjoy the Mediterranean landscape and get comfortable with your bike and GPS navigation app.
The day ends with a seafood dinner by the water, as the sun sets over the Tyrrhenian Sea. It’s the perfect start to your cycling journey through Lazio, filled with sea breeze, local hospitality, and the promise of an unforgettable adventure to Orvieto.
The second day of your cycling trip from Fiumicino to Rome is one of the most scenic stages. Leaving the sea behind, you follow the Tiber cycle path, a safe and flat route immersed in nature—an authentic and panoramic way to enter Rome.
Far from the city traffic, the Tiber riverside bike path winds along the embankment, passing historic bridges, green parks, and quiet residential areas. As you ride, the scenery slowly changes: the domes of the capital, the river reflections, and hidden corners that only cyclists get to see. It’s truly one of the most beautiful and surprising ways to enter the Eternal City.
Reaching the center of Rome is an emotional moment. After checking in at your hotel, you’ll have free time to enjoy a first taste of Rome’s atmosphere—its alleys, squares, fountains, and the magical light of sunset over the city.
A full day dedicated to exploring Rome by bike, following an itinerary designed to show you the city’s most iconic landmarks safely and comfortably. It’s the most immersive way to experience the Eternal City on two wheels.
From the Colosseum to the Roman Forum, from the Circus Maximus to the Capitoline Hill, and onward to the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and Piazza del Popolo—Rome unveils itself as an open-air museum where every corner tells a thousand-year-old story.
The route ends in the greenery of Villa Borghese Park, with a final stop at the Pincio Terrace, one of the most breathtaking sunset viewpoints in the city.
Second night in Rome.
Leaving the magic of Rome behind, your journey continues along the historic Via Francigena, one of Europe’s most iconic pilgrimage routes. You start by cycling from the Vatican, heading north through an itinerary that blends ancient history, lush landscapes, and the quiet charm of the Roman countryside.
The first stretch crosses the urban outskirts up to Saxa Rubra, where the city fades and the landscape completely transforms. The route becomes green, peaceful and scenic, with fields, olive groves, farmhouses and long rows of cypress trees guiding your way. It’s the perfect moment to embrace the slow rhythm of travel: this is the Via Francigena by bike at its most authentic.
Through gentle hills, gravel roads and small rural villages, you reach Campagnano di Roma, considered one of the gateways to the Lazio countryside. A welcoming stop, ideal for reconnecting with nature and experiencing the genuine soul of the region.
A transition stage, in the best sense: the shift from the bustling capital to the quiet landscapes of Lazio, where the most intimate and contemplative part of your journey toward Orvieto truly begins.
Woods, hilltop towns and thermal waters**
Day five is one of the most scenic and diverse stages of the entire Via Francigena cycling route. Leaving Campagnano, you head toward the Cimini Mountains, riding through constantly changing landscapes: shaded forests, quiet country roads, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the valleys of Tuscia. The pace becomes steady and peaceful, surrounded by the silence of the Lazio countryside.
A stop in Caprarola is highly recommended: Palazzo Farnese, a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the region and adds a rich cultural dimension to the journey.
The route continues toward Viterbo, marking the official entrance into the heart of Etruscan Tuscia. Medieval alleys, stone houses and the charming district of San Pellegrino create an atmosphere that feels frozen in time.
Don’t miss the chance to relax at the famous Terme dei Papi, renowned sulfur baths once frequented by popes — the perfect reward after a day of riding.
Overnight stay in Viterbo, surrounded by history, wellness, and the authentic charm of one of Lazio’s most fascinating cities.
The sixth stage of your journey is a true gift for cyclists who love riding through nature. Leaving Viterbo, the route winds through gentle hills, golden fields, and vineyards that reflect the agricultural soul of the Tuscia region. The ride is pleasant and never too demanding, with panoramic stretches opening onto a pristine rural landscape.
As you continue through this scenery, a magical sight appears in the distance: the shimmering waters of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. Nestled inside an ancient crater and surrounded by woods, olive groves, and small towns, it offers one of the most memorable views of the entire itinerary.
Reaching the town of Bolsena, with its stone alleyways, the Monaldeschi fortress, and lakeside restaurants, feels like entering a peaceful and welcoming village full of history and tradition. It’s the perfect place to relax, stroll by the water, and enjoy the typical cuisine of Tuscia.
Don’t miss a dinner featuring local lake fish, such as whitefish or perch, paired with Tuscia wines—the perfect toast to celebrate the second-to-last stage of your cycling journey along the Via Francigena.
The Loop of Wonders: Civita di Bagnoregio and the Cliff of Orvieto.
The final stage of the journey is a crescendo of emotions and breathtaking landscapes. Setting off from the shores of Lake Bolsena, you will delve into the heart of the most authentic Tuscia until you reach the famous Civita di Bagnoregio, known as the "Dying City," perched precariously in a valley of clay canyons unique in the world.
The route then continues toward the imposing cliff of Orvieto, which dominates the valley with its unmistakable silhouette. Arriving below the city is one of the most spectacular moments of the trip: the road winds upward to the historic center, where you will be welcomed by the golden façade of the Duomo, an absolute masterpiece of Italian Gothic architecture. After a break to explore the artisan shops or enjoy a glass of Orvieto Classico wine, you will cycle back to Bolsena for your final evening by the lake.
Technical Note:
This stage is the longest and most demanding of the tour due to the elevation gain. To best enjoy the views without excessive effort, we highly recommend using an E-bike.
Upon request, it is possible to arrange the final overnight stay directly in Orvieto (for a small extra cost). This allows you to experience the village’s evening atmosphere and depart conveniently by train toward Rome or Fiumicino Airport the following morning.
